Hot on the heels of several successful albums with Civil War, vocalist Nils Patrik Johansson has returned to an even greater triumph with Evil Deluxe! Easily one of the most distinctive, and naturally metal sounding voices to come to power in the last couple of decades, Johansson possesses a strangely charismatic snarl and regal yet rebellious attitude that is impossible to resist.

While some of his efforts with Civil War had some hit-and-miss songwriting, on Evil Deluxe there is an admirable consistency and stylistic focus. Adding to that already potent combination is a perfectly polished Power Metal album production. Additionally, the songs sometimes leave Johansson’s vocals very exposed, and while some vocalists would shrink away in that situation, Johansson powers through and delivers the goods.

As good as the lead vocals are on Evil Deluxe, the rest of the album stands up nicely to that watershed performance. Well placed synth elements, occasional gang choruses, and properly blistering moments of guitar work are all sprinkled throughout. Highlights of this release a numerous and include “Evil Deluxe”, “September Black”, and the instantly infectious “Metalhead”. Headbangers of the world rejoice! Evil Deluxe is a treat for the ears and soul!
