When costumes are the band’s image, it might mean the music needs a crutch. Look at us, don’t listen to us! Yes, I am talking to you Kiss, Ghost and Slipknot. Joining this fray, Warkings don the personas of “…a Roman tribune, a savage Nordic warrior, a determined crusader and a lethal Spartan.” Citing their influences: Helloween, Gamma Ray and Manowar the songs are warrior themed and described as “…pure and unadulterated metal…”

“Give em War” leads the debut album with blend of speed and anthemic riffs coupled with equally inspired lyrics. The riffs are delivered with the tone, grit and menace of churning Panzer treads while the vocals are delivered with the grace and power of a guided missile. “Never Surrender” is a pre-battle pep talk with riffs successfully imparting medieval savagery. “Hephaistos” features a knuckle dragging riff eerily reminiscent of Dream Evil’s “The Book Of Heavy Metal”. The hits keep coming throughout the album with “Sparta” a stand out featuring death metal growls and a sword raising chorus.

Weakness is not an option for warriors. Reborn is a strong performance from start to finish and doesn’t need any visual gimmicks to shine. The musicianship, songwriting and production are polished and professional. Highly recommended for fans of Traditional and Power Metal and should be on your shortlist for best Heavy Metal debuts of 2018.

Zac was a reviewer here at Metal Express Radio, hailing from Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA. His interest in heavy music began in the 70s with his father’s Johnny Cash albums. After cousins introduced him to Steppenwolf, Bachman-Turner Overdrive, KISS, Black Sabbath and Deep Purple, Johnny Cash didn’t stand a chance. The 80s were spent in full pursuit of everything Metal: searching for new music at record stores, listening to albums, studying the covers and sleeves, and attending concerts. In the 90s, he preferred Death Metal over Grunge and hosted the Death Metal Juggernaut on WUPX in Marquette, Michigan. It was advertised as the only prime time Death Metal radio show in the country.
