Scaryman is the debut full length album from Swedish Glam Rock band Lipz.  Formed in 2008 by brothers Alexander Klintberg (vocals, guitar) and Koffe Klintberg (drums); and Conny Svard (guitar), and after a lengthy search for a suitable vocalist and bassist, Alex decided to take on both roles, and Lipz moved on as a three piece.  The songs on Scaryman show a myriad of Glam Rock and Hair Metal influences, from Kiss to Poison to Motley Crue.  Alex’s voice definitely has a high range, gritty quality reminiscent of the 80s Sunset Strip.  The choice, however, of “Scaryman” as the first song, and title track of this record is difficult to understand, since it is by far the weakest track.

The lyrics almost sound like a children’s’ song, and musically it is the least interesting piece of the 10 songs, except perhaps for the now extremely over done cliché of using track one as some sort of one minute intro nonsense, which many bands are inexplicably now doing.  Track one on Scaryman, “The Awakening”,  is a random mix of ominous music, barking dogs, and basically 1:26 of life the listener will never get back.  Followed by the song “Scaryman” which tempts the listener to remove the disc and hope for a refund of the purchase price.  If you can hang in (or skip the first couple), the record improves dramatically.  “Fighter” has a distinct Kiss vibe, ala “Strutter”, and “Falling Away” are solid rockers.  Well produced overall, Scaryman is worth checking out.

Stevie was a reviewer here at Metal Express Radio. He is currently the lead guitarist for Melodic Rock band Red Reign, based in Richmond, Virginia, USA. Red Reign toured with Tesla in 2017, and shared the stage with Dokken, FireHouse, Lita Ford, Kix, Quiet Riot, and others at various dates around the US in 2018. Stevie heard his first KISS record at the age of 6 and was immediately hooked on Rock and Roll guitar. Over the course of years his tastes evolved, graduating from KISS to Ozzy and Van Halen; and then into Hair Metal. Over time, harder and faster music drew him. Bands like Metallica, Pantera, and Anthrax led the way, and Killswitch Engage took him over the top. Stevie has a deep passion for the guitar, not only playing them, but building them as well.
