Heavy Metal History Lessons

When thinking of Heavy Metal bands who write their songs about historical events, the first and foremost group to come to mind is none other than Swedish power metallers Sabaton. Following up to 2019’s The Great War, the band is releasing The War To End All Wars this April, bringing more stories to light about World War I. The band continues to show their knack for creating Heavy Metal music that sings of real-life wars and the people who played a part in them, of grueling campaigns and dazzling acts of bravery, and of touching personal struggles.

The Great War (Continued)

Written and recorded between spring 2020 and spring 2021, the band has crafted a concept album of 11 brand-new songs that once again dive deep into the atrocities, miracles, and events tied to World War I. According to vocalist Joakim Brodén, there were still stories linked to the First World War left untold on the band’s 2019 release, The Great War. “In some cases,” he explains, “we just didn’t have the right music, and there were specific stories we had wanted to tell, like ‘The Christmas Truce’ and ‘Hellfighters.’ Also, once we went on tour in support of The Great War, we met and heard from so many fans who told us about other great WWI stories we’d never heard before, stories that were just so good, we kept asking ourselves, how did we miss this?”

Final Notes

For over 2 decades, Sabaton has thrilled fans with great Heavy Metal music based on military history, and The War To End All Wars fits perfectly into their own history as a new musical achievement. Every song is packed with heavy riffs, pounding drums, fantastic guitar work and anthemic choruses that have you singing along almost instantly. As always their production is top notch, the musicianship is stunning, and the lyrics are a perfect way to learn of history’s great triumphs and failures. Is there a better way to take in a history lesson? Not for this reviewer. The War To End All Wars will be available in a wide variety of exclusive formats, including CD, vinyl, and cassette, with most as limited editions, leaving no excuse not to own this album.

About Bryce Van Patten 332 Articles
Bryce is an audio engineer and a graphic designer here at Metal Express Radio. From the day he purchased his first album (Machine Head by Deep Purple), he has had a passion for heavy music, which has influenced his whole life. Bryce is from the great Pacific Northwest in USA, and has played in metal bands like Babylon, Holy Terror, The Wild Dogs, Warhead and Egypt through the 80s. He had his first interview for the Portland, Oregon publication The Rock Rag with guitarist Paul Gilbert in his Racer X days. Then he was honored to get to have drinks, and talk for an hour with the legendary Dan McCafferty of Nazareth for his second interview. In 2013, he spent an amazing hour talking to Andi Deris of Helloween, which was the high point of his heavy metal journalism.   In the year 2001, he formed Man in Black Music Publishing. They released recordings by several local bands, and in the spirit of the old Metal Massacre compilations, he created a 2-album series called The Defenders of Metal. The albums featured classic styled Metal bands from all around the world, with bands from Australia to England, and from Argentina to Russia. Currently, he is the producer/creator/vocalist of the Metal band The Black Tuesdays.
