( vote)You’ll be hard pressed to find a more genuine and authentic 80’s Glam / Sleaze Rock album in the contemporary music scene than Public Enemies from Pretty Boy Floyd. They have stayed well anchored to their classic style, both musically and aesthetically. This covers everything from the vocal style, guitar riffs, and drum patterns, to the lyrical themes and melodic sensibilities. This includes some of the typical strikes against Glam Rock albums, like the narrow stylistic limitations and predictable themes, but considering this is from a band that helped to establish the genre, these criticisms can be forgiven.
Steve Summers’ voice is snarling and cutting, coming across as a haphazard mix of Sebastian Bach and a more melodic Dave Mustaine. It fits the songs perfectly.
Even Pretty Boy Floyd’s new music video is a perfect throw back to the band’s late 80’s heyday. Featuring leather clad women, pyrotechnics, and black Les Pauls, this is a tribute to a long gone, but well-loved era of feel-good Metal.
Public Enemies is a generous release, with 14 tracks total. Highlights include “Feel The Heat”, “American Dream”, the obligatory power ballad “We Can’t Bring Back Yesterday”, and the late-album uptempo track “Star Chaser”. Any young or old fan of 80’s Hair Metal who wants to rock like the good ‘ol days, can’t go wrong with Public Enemies.
