Helstar is an American Traditional/ Doom/ Power/ Thrash Metal band whose genesis stems back to the early ‘80s alongside the likes of Metallica and Exodus, but unlike those peers, Helstar experienced a rather tumultuous and unglamorous career throughout the decades.  In 2006, they began writing new material, and This Wicked Nest is their latest offering. James Rivera still belts out his lyrical lines a la Venom’s Cronos, but the band’s sound within This Wicked Nest is more Traditional and Doomy rather than Power or Thrash influenced.  This album’s consistent, but comes across as dated and offers little that is immediately memorable or creative.

Based out of Indianapolis, USA he was first turned on to Hard Rock music in the mid-1970s when he purchased Deep Purple's Machine Head as his first album. He was immediately enthralled with the powerful guitar sound and pronounced drumbeat, and had to get more! His collection quickly expanded to include as many of Heavy Rock bands of the time that he could get his hands on, such as Ted Nugent, Judas Priest, and Black Sabbath, to name just a few.
