Founding member guitarist, Chris Ira, has had a rough time getting his band Nimrod, now called Nimrod B.C., off the ground.  The Santiago, Chile, Thrash Metal band formed in 1985 and experienced the pains of a band struggling to succeed: a failed record deal, dissolving, and reforming. God Of War And Chaos is produced by Ira and is the band’s third release.  The album is barrage of dark themed songs expelling years of pent up energy and rage. Sonically, it occupies a soothing and powerful mid-range space.  This subdued mix eliminates any piercing high notes but has a muting effect on the cymbals and snare drum. The new vocalist, Gary Wayne, is an excellent fit.  His style and delivery is a blend of David Wayne of Metal Church and Cam Pipes of 3 Inches Of Blood.

Bay Area Thrash Metal intensity is evident from the opening notes of the instrumental “Introduction To Revolution”.  “Revolution Evilution” follows with frantic energy and bludgeoning power reminiscent of Metallica’s “Fight Fire With Fire”.  The first half of the album follows this up-tempo sonic assault style culminating with the outstanding “Frontal Assault” a song which ratchets up the menace by easing off the tempo and features a chorus sung slowly enough for the listener to rally behind.  Mid-album, Ira wisely backs off with a fluffy guitar and keyboard instrumental before launching into another highlight track, “They Shall Not Pass”.  Starting with a guitar solo, this mid-tempo song features the most melodic fret board action on the album.  Unfortunately, the three remaining songs don’t match the intensity or quality of earlier tracks ending the album on a mediocre note.

It’s clear from his guitar sound to his songwriting – Ira knows his audience well. God Of War And Chaos is a triumph of perseverance with many songs sure to please Thrash Metal fans.

About Zac Halter 174 Articles
Zac was a reviewer here at Metal Express Radio, hailing from Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA. His interest in heavy music began in the 70s with his father’s Johnny Cash albums. After cousins introduced him to Steppenwolf, Bachman-Turner Overdrive, KISS, Black Sabbath and Deep Purple, Johnny Cash didn’t stand a chance. The 80s were spent in full pursuit of everything Metal: searching for new music at record stores, listening to albums, studying the covers and sleeves, and attending concerts. In the 90s, he preferred Death Metal over Grunge and hosted the Death Metal Juggernaut on WUPX in Marquette, Michigan. It was advertised as the only prime time Death Metal radio show in the country.
