Hard Rock Face Punch

From Sweden’s Punk Metal foursome Cobra Cult comes their sophomore album titled appropriately: Second Gear. Formed in Stolkholm back in 2015 by vocalist/guitarist Johanna Lindhult (ex-Ordogs) and bassist/backing vocals Thomas Jonsson (ex-Circle of Chaos), the high energy, punk influenced unit is completed by slamming drummer Carl Johan “Sillen” Sillén and Anders Martinsgård on guitars. These veterans of the Swiss Music scene combine their different musical backgrounds, influences and experiences to create a band with in-your-face punky riffs and short, sweet songs to bang your head.

Short & Sweet

Second Gear is a collection of 8 bopping Punk Metal songs that in total last just under 24 minutes, which is refreshing in a time when many releases top the 60 minute mark because they can. The album was recorded and mixed by Robert Pehrsson (Robert Pehrsson‘s Humbucker, Death Breath) at Studio Humbucker and mastered by Joel Grind (Dee Snider, Toxic Holocaust, Municipal Waste). The sound is straight forward Metal/Punk riffs that drive you through the playlist effortlessly, making you feel like you ought to go hit play again from the top.

Top Tracks

Right out of the gates we are hit with a kicking drum intro on “Sell Your Soul” that reminds of early Mötley Crüe. The guitar tones are perfect, and the driving sound takes us back to early NWOBHM sounds from Girlschool on “The Devil’s End”. “Hey” is pure fun and will have you bopping and moshing along with the band.

Final Notes

Second Gear by Cobra Cult offers us a taste of honest Heavy Metal that has elements of 80s NWOBHM mixed with Punk Rock energy. The drums are snappy, the guitars are loud and in your face, while the vocals have a Punk feel that is the icing on a sweet, moshing cake. For fans of Girlschool, The Misfits and Punk Metal, you can’t go wrong in adding this album to your collection.
