Germany’s Mortal Infinity combine 80s and early 90s Thrash Metal with modern elements of newer Extreme Metal genres.  The band says it’s “straightforward slap-in-the-face thrash…with various death elements.” Their third full-length album aims to surpass their previous efforts in both complexity and song writing.

“Fellowship Of Rats” and “Misanthropic Collapse” deliver an impressive 1-2 opening punch.  Vocals seethe with Thrash Metal scorn and derision; intricate guitar work, plenty of speed, a good mix of tempos, and machine gun drum beats power a menacing rhythm section.  The sprinkle of Death Metal riffing and vocal growls adds another level of complexity. These songs beg the listener to turn up the volume for maximum vengeance.

The thoughtful writing and spirited execution of these openers make it tough for the remaining songs to stand out.  There’s no shortage of excellent ideas and riffs to build on, but they fall short of realizing their potential. This is evident on “Repulsive Messiah” and “Dream Crusher”.  These knuckle-dragging tracks have awesome riffs which crush rather than dazzle, but mediocre bridge and solo work push the songs long. The songs end up tiring out instead of tagging out.

“Devastator, Devastated” and “In Cold Blood” are later tracks that stand out for fulfilling the band’s vision of writing quality songs.  The former for its Melodic and Thrash Metal interplay and the latter for bulldozing riffs leading to a climactic Thrash Metal eruption.

In Cold Blood is a fun listen competently mixed and produced.   The band is adept at spawning crushing riffs but at their best when they build intricate song structures to realize the potential of each.

About Zac Halter 174 Articles
Zac was a reviewer here at Metal Express Radio, hailing from Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA. His interest in heavy music began in the 70s with his father’s Johnny Cash albums. After cousins introduced him to Steppenwolf, Bachman-Turner Overdrive, KISS, Black Sabbath and Deep Purple, Johnny Cash didn’t stand a chance. The 80s were spent in full pursuit of everything Metal: searching for new music at record stores, listening to albums, studying the covers and sleeves, and attending concerts. In the 90s, he preferred Death Metal over Grunge and hosted the Death Metal Juggernaut on WUPX in Marquette, Michigan. It was advertised as the only prime time Death Metal radio show in the country.
