While, Poseidon Will Carry Us Home, does contain some fun conceptual themes, the lackluster album production and unoriginal riffage and song elements keeps Hammer King’s third album from being anything noteworthy. On the surface, there a lot of important Power Metal elements in use here: dual lead guitar lines, double kick-drum work, epic vocal high notes, and although they are sometimes used effectively, more often than not, these elements are simply inserted because that is what the audience is expecting and not because they actually make any real contribution to the song.

Front man Titan Fox’s singing chops are impressive, but the too-obviously-layered vocal mix leaves his performance sounding thin and underwhelming. A similar problem occurs with the drums. Sonically, they lack the power and percussiveness that great metal drums should really have.

These various missteps in the execution are really a shame when you listen to tracks like “We Sail Cape Horn” which could have been absolutely brilliant, if delivered in a more convincing manner. Hopefully Hammer King will be able to regroup and, perhaps with the aid of a new producer, bring their sound to the metal battle front once more.
