JIZZY PEARL OF LOVE/HATE – All You Need Is Soul

The nasty elements of Sleaze Rock all come together on All You Need Is Soul, the new release from Jizzy Pearl (of Love/Hate, as the album art reminds potential listeners). He’s in fine form on the album, both in terms of the songwriting and the way he delivers those songs, and the bluesy tear of his voice is well-paired with the dirty guitar shred of occasional Love/Hate collaborator Darren Housholder. Drums are courtesy of Puddle of Mudd’s Dave Moreno, and Mark “Muddy” Dutton, previously of Chris Robinson Brotherhood provides the bass. All three musicians have played on various projects with Jizzy in the past, and they blend together well on All You Need Is Soul.

Despite the top billing, this doesn’t come across as an ego-driven vanity gig on Jizzy’s part; each of the musicians has equal weight and no one is relegated to the background. Opener “You’re Gonna Miss Me When I’m Gone” is a great tune that seems both prophetic and a bit of an “I told you so”—listening, one can’t help but wish there was more music in this vein—and of this quality—released these days. Other standouts include the title track, mini-epic “When The Devil Comes” (nearly twice as long as any of the other eleven tracks at six minutes, forty-six seconds), and the low-slung closer “Mr. Jimmy. Jizzy’s a journeyman with stints in L.A. Guns and Quiet Riot, among others; All You Need Is Soul leaves one hoping the band that created it clicks with listeners and works together again.
