Canadian Classical Metal act Snake Eyes Seven are back with a new, full-length album. Medicine Man is a wonderfully produced collection of thundering, RIOT-esq, archetypal Traditional Rock Metal tracks.

Featuring nine songs, Medicine Man delivers the goods generously on the up-tempo and more groove oriented tracks, and although some of the slower songs suffer from cliché (for the genre) songwriting, even those are somewhat saved by the top-level production quality. This album has a fatness, and crispness that many other modern releases aspire to and fail to reach.

In a genre that is so well-tread, it can be a true challenge to stand out from the pack. Originality often comes at the expensive of accessibility and this release is no exception. On tracks like “Angel Of Death”, and “Speaking Ill Of The Dead”, the band has made some attempts and distancing itself from traditional song structures. While this does give the songs a fresh sound, it simultaneously creates an awkward vibe within them that might leave some listeners squirming uncomfortably in their seats. It’s worth noting that this only happens on certain songs, and passes almost as quickly as you notice it. The speediest track of the album, “The Kill”, is perhaps the highlight of this release and should please just about anyone with an appetite for air-drumming. Overall, Medicine Man is a fun, creatively leaning Classic Metal album that will find a good home with most Traditional Metal fans.
