Sometimes a simple approach is the best: guitar, bass, drums, and vocals. Raleigh, North Carolina’s Demon Eye successfully blends these elements with imaginative songs and a spacious mix for their 3rd full-length release Prophecies And Lies. A self-described blend of Heavy Classic Rock, Proto Metal and Traditional Doom, their sound is reminiscent of Budgie, Rival Sons, and Black Sabbath. Their songs vary in tempo from plodding to raging and contain quality guitar hooks, multi-faceted bridges, and tasteful guitar solos. Vocals are delivered in an Ozzy-like cadence with, at times, distractingly heavy vibrato. The recording done by the bassist for Corrosion Of Conformity, Mike Dean, captures each element distinctly, allowing the listener to easily shift focus during repeated listens to experience the songs differently.

The opening track “The Waters And The Wild” boldly leads the listener into the Demon Eye realm with a solid rhythm section and guitarist unafraid of giving one another space to make a statement, and spectral vocals to tie it all together. “In The Spider’s Eye” and “The Redeemer” continue the journey with an increase in tempo, and varied and multi-tempo bridges which should keep you engaged. Other highlights include the hook-laden grooves of “Vagabond” featuring liberal use of cowbell and bass fret board wanderings. The closing track “Morning’s Son” features a bridge which would be at home on Black Sabbath’s Vol. 4 album. The only weak song is the spoken word title track “Prophecies And Lies,” which leaves you scrambling for the lyric sheet trying to decipher the vocals driven over by the instruments.

If you have an itch only riff-laden Doom Metal tunes can scratch, this album is for you. Prophecies And Lies is loaded with well-crafted songs mixed well and performed with nuance and grit. Enjoy at high volume.

About Zac Halter 174 Articles
Zac was a reviewer here at Metal Express Radio, hailing from Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA. His interest in heavy music began in the 70s with his father’s Johnny Cash albums. After cousins introduced him to Steppenwolf, Bachman-Turner Overdrive, KISS, Black Sabbath and Deep Purple, Johnny Cash didn’t stand a chance. The 80s were spent in full pursuit of everything Metal: searching for new music at record stores, listening to albums, studying the covers and sleeves, and attending concerts. In the 90s, he preferred Death Metal over Grunge and hosted the Death Metal Juggernaut on WUPX in Marquette, Michigan. It was advertised as the only prime time Death Metal radio show in the country.
