FIREWIND – Still Raging – Live at the Principal Theater

The brainchild of phenomenal guitarist Gus G (Gus G, Kriterion, ex-Dream Evil, ex-Ozzy Osbourne), Firewind has been giving fans great Heavy Metal since 1998. After nine studio albums and a live album back in 2012, the band has released a new live concert on video/CD titled Still Raging – Live at the Principal Theater. Following up to 2020’s self-titled album which introduced new vocalist Herbie Langhans (Avantasia, Radiant, Seventh Avenue) to fans, this concert shows us how strong and powerful Firewind still are as they celebrate 20 years. 20th Anniversary Concert Recorded in 2022 at the Principal Theater in Thessaloniki, Greece, Still Raging shows the band at the top of their game in front of an enthusiastic hometown crowd. Gus G talks about how the album came about: “In 2022 we had only planned a re-issue of our debut album, but with the pandemic slowly winding down, we were fortunate enough to start doing shows in America and Europe again. Come Fall of 2022 we played 2 headline shows in our homeland, Greece to celebrate our 20th anniversary.” Final Notes Firewind – Still Raging will be available on Blu-Ray and as a 2 CD edition, so whether you just want the just the music, or the whole package, it’s a bargain either way. The band is super tight with Gus G at the helm, and the drumming by Jo Nunez is nothing short of incredible. With 19 songs and a drum solo, there’s plenty of great music to warm the hearts of not just Firewind fans, but anyone who digs kick ass Power Metal. FIREWIND – Firewind

Firewind is Back! The wait is over. Firewind has a new self-titled album, and it’s been well worth waiting for. If you follow guitar virtuosos then you are probably more than familiar with the work of Gus G from not only his longtime band Firewind, but also from his excellent work in Dream Evil, Ozzy Osbourne, Mystic Prophecy and Nightrage just to name a few. A band that started as a personal project for Gus G to showcase his demo Nocturnal Symphony back in 1998 has become a full blown kick ass Power Metal band and the album proves it.  Although the line has changed a bit over the years, this group sounds like they have been together for a long time. New Blood New lead vocalist Herbie Langhans (Avantasia, Radiant, Seventh Avenue, among others) adds his unique voice to the mix, bring a real depth and variety to the material. Gus G explains how he recruited their new singer: “I remembered Herbie singing for Sinbreed and how amazed I always was by his vocal performance”, he recalls. “So I did some research on YouTube, had my record company reach out to him and got right down to it: Hi Herbie, here are ten new songs, can you help us? Deadline is mid of January. Luckily, Herbie agreed immediately and got familiarized with everything in no time.” A few weeks later they had the album recorded and ready for Swedish sound engineer Tobias Lindell (H.E.A.T., Mustache, Europe and Avatar) to work his special magic and behold: Firewind is reborn again. The Songs The album opens with a beautiful acoustic guitar part that leads us into the anthemic “Welcome to the Empire”. Langhans growls a bit, yet remains melodic in his vocal delivery on this strong opener which has classical overtones …READ MORE

FIREWIND - Immortals

FIREWIND – Immortals

Greece’s own Firewind is back at it again after a rather long (for them at least) hiatus with their 8th studio record entitled Immortals.  For those new to the band, the leader is none other than Gus G, who is an immensely talented Power Metal guitarist who has also released solo records and has most recently been named the main guitarist for Ozzy Osbourne’s band. The only thing “plaguing” Firewind throughout their existence has been lack of continuity at the microphone.  They’ve at times had some real talent there, but that signature Firewind style has been lacking due to the frequent vocalist changes.  The latest chap to take a crack at it is Henning Basse, and with his Traditional/Classic Metal voice, he seems to fill the role quite well and his vocal style blends impressively with the music on this Immortals CD.  So, at least that main hurdle (for now) is conquered. But, as expected, the true star of the show is Gus G and his tasteful playing and blistering virtuosity as the main axeman of Firewind.  Guitar enthusiasts likely will never tire hearing Gus play, and Gus certainly doesn’t disappoint throughout this release. One of the better Power Metal releases to be sure for all of 2017 … check it out. ROCK WEEKEND FESTIVAL 2008 (DAY 2)

Day 2 of 2, Saturday July 19th LION’S SHARE Lion’s Share took a break from recording its new album by playing Rock Weekend, and had to do so in front of a rain soaked few. This band never seems to get a decent break for whatever reason; they certainly have a good enough set of strong songs in their arsenal, and last year’s Emotional Coma was a great comeback record after a six year silence where new recordings are concerned. The few people that had bothered to gather though, got treated to a couple of songs from the anticipated follow-up. These songs, “Heavy Cross to Bare” and “Judas Must Die,” show great promise in that a worthy successor is to be expected. There seems to be an anti-attitude amongst many people towards this band in its home country, for reasons unknown, but good on Lion’s Share for soldiering on with showed enthusiasm anyway, despite the crap weather and poor turnout for their set. With Patrik Johansson (Astral Doors) on board, they have secured one of Sweden’s best current singers in any case, and his characteristic voice blends in perfectly with the darker, more sinister direction which Lion’s Share is clearly taking its music. H.E.A.T. Fittingly enough, the sun breaks through the mold just as H.E.A.T. are about to go on stage. Not an awful band by any means, but what initial appeal they offer just wears off quick for whatever reason; feels like less interior than exterior, with a great deal of fluff in-between. Maybe it’s because only bits, not the whole, of the songs stays with you enough for this kind of music, coupled with the fact they dress like Hysteria-era Def Leppard. Unlike the latter, it’s hard to imagine their songs being a mainstay for years to come, …READ MORE
