Cold Star Dancer is the third studio release from Northern Ireland based Hard Rock/Melodic Rock band Maverick. Founded in 2012 by brothers David (vocals) and Ryan (guitar) Balfour, Maverick have sought to build upon the foundations of Heavy Melodic Rock they created with their first 2 albums, and a series of well received festival appearances across Europe. The current lineup features Richie Diver on bass guitar, and Jonathon Millar on drums, with lead guitar duties split between TREAT guitarist Anders Wikstrom (“Ex-Machina” and “Cold Star Dancer”) and STORMZONE guitarist Steve Moore (“Myrmidon”, “Viper”, and “ Devils Night”), and Balfour covering the rest until a new permanent guitarist is found.

Cold Star Dancer kicks off with “Dusk”, an ethereal one minute intro interlude, typical for many new releases lately. It quickly launches into the title track, “Cold Star Dancer”. David Balfour has a great voice, and his style is very well suited to this particular brand of Melodic Hard Rock. Reminiscent of 80s Hair Metal, but evolved. Very listenable hooks and riffs permeate Cold Star Dancer. “Seize The Day” and “Viper” stand out as probably the most AOR friendly tracks, and a surprisingly enjoyable cover of Rick Springfield’s “Jessie’s Girl” rounds out the 12 tracks of Cold Star Dancer. Fans of Melodic Rock, Hair Metal, and AOR music should give Maverick a listen.

Stevie was a reviewer here at Metal Express Radio. He is currently the lead guitarist for Melodic Rock band Red Reign, based in Richmond, Virginia, USA. Red Reign toured with Tesla in 2017, and shared the stage with Dokken, FireHouse, Lita Ford, Kix, Quiet Riot, and others at various dates around the US in 2018. Stevie heard his first KISS record at the age of 6 and was immediately hooked on Rock and Roll guitar. Over the course of years his tastes evolved, graduating from KISS to Ozzy and Van Halen; and then into Hair Metal. Over time, harder and faster music drew him. Bands like Metallica, Pantera, and Anthrax led the way, and Killswitch Engage took him over the top. Stevie has a deep passion for the guitar, not only playing them, but building them as well.
