The gravel-hewn, whiskey-soaked vocals of Orange County’s Robert Jon Burrison seemed somewhat appropriate given that tonight’s show was held within the legendary Wylam Brewery. Perhaps it was this or maybe Robert Jon and the Wreck’s affinity for Newcastle that sparked something really special throughout their 12-song set.
12 songs may sound like a relatively short show, but when the band stretches out, giving the hugely impressive guitar maestro Henry James ample time to shine, it really does ramp things up a notch or two. Whether it was the dirty, grimy slide “Ashes In The Snow”, the soaring solo on “Better Of Me” or the wah wah infused “Long Gone”, James was an absolute revelation and the perfect foil for Burrison’s gritty, lived-in vocals.
On the supremely classy epic, “Heartbreak and Last Goodbyes”, the title track to their latest opus, the rollicking “Last Goodbye” and the Gov’t Mule inspired romp of “Red Moon Rising” they have the songs to go toe to toe with anyone and in the infectious “Oh Miss Carolina”, the ability to pen a neat hook that just may bag them a major hit sooner than they think. Big, big things await.
