Defying Gravity is the ninth studio release from American Rock supergroup Mr. Big. Comprised of members Eric Martin, vocals (Eric Martin Band), Paul Gilbert, guitar (Racer X, Solo), Billy Sheehan, bass (David Lee Roth, Winery Dogs), and Pat Torpey, drums (Impelliteri, Ted Nugent, The Knack), Mr. Big is best known for their number one hit “To Be With You” from 1992’s Lean Into It.

If you are a Mr. Big fan, this record holds no surprises for you. The members are amongst the top performers alive today. Sheehan and Gilbert are world renowned musicians. Martin’s voice is strong as ever, and while Torpey’s recent diagnosis of Parkinson’s disease hampered his ability to perform, he guided the programming of the drums for the record. Defying Gravity delivers that trademark Mr. Big sound, melody, punch and crunch, and tasteful virtuosity.

The record kicks off strong with “Open Your Eyes”, a classic Blues Rock riff jazzed up with intense synchronized runs between Gilbert and Sheehan; a Mr. Big signature. “1992” is probably the heaviest track on the record, and lyrically is autobiographical, revealing some of their personal struggles with fame. For the fan of Mr. Big, every song on Defying Gravity is worth a listen. It is the next step in the evolution of their sound, while maintaining the signature elements that make them a great band. Fans of Melodic Rock should check Mr. Big out.

Stevie was a reviewer here at Metal Express Radio. He is currently the lead guitarist for Melodic Rock band Red Reign, based in Richmond, Virginia, USA. Red Reign toured with Tesla in 2017, and shared the stage with Dokken, FireHouse, Lita Ford, Kix, Quiet Riot, and others at various dates around the US in 2018. Stevie heard his first KISS record at the age of 6 and was immediately hooked on Rock and Roll guitar. Over the course of years his tastes evolved, graduating from KISS to Ozzy and Van Halen; and then into Hair Metal. Over time, harder and faster music drew him. Bands like Metallica, Pantera, and Anthrax led the way, and Killswitch Engage took him over the top. Stevie has a deep passion for the guitar, not only playing them, but building them as well.
