Canadian Industrial Rock duo He Is Me, featuring long time collaborators Casey Braunger and Steve Moore, have unleashed their latest single “Cleansing”. The rousing 6 minute track winds its way through shadowy sonic corridors made of anger and fear. The mood here is a dark one, filled with haunting melodies and elements of mystery and coercion. He Is Me manages to balance a unique combination of aggression and melancholy while simultaneously presenting evidence of the group’s originality.

The themes explored in “Cleansing” reflect much of the unrest and uncertainty that we find in the world’s current political and social landscape. Although that is nothing new in mainstream music, He Is Me have a fresh yet familiar take on it. A strong sense of patience grown thin permeates the lyrics and vocal delivery. This track is one that would feel right at home being blasted in a dark, decrepit alley lit only by the angry glow of a burning trash pile.

Although the song structure is not the most intricate, it still serves as an appropriate vehicle for He Is Me’s artistic goals. Likewise, the production is a bit uneven, with some instruments, such as the guitars, cutting through more than they need to. Despite these minor technical shortcomings, “Cleansing” still creates an inviting sound and intimate vibe. There are even minimalist moments to be found here, but they are well placed and serve to create frothy, ear-pleasing dynamics and a sense of drama.

Like other new contemporary acts, He Is Me is following the more and more popular strategy of an ongoing release of singles instead of presenting a full album up front. Thanks to a consistent songwriting approach, this method will likely serve the band well. If “Cleansing” is any indication of what is to come, fans of Industrial, Ambient and Groove Rock will enjoy all that this group has to offer.
