The only blue sky coming out of the dark cloud of Lemmy’s death is that Motorhead band members such as guitarist Phil Campbell are now “free” to make their own music and to spread their wings, if you will. Campbell’s debut is a self-titled 5-track gem under the moniker Phil Campbell And The Bastard Sons. And you know what? It’s not just a clever name for a band … since three members of the band are actually Phil’s sons (mothered by who is anyone’s guess!).

The vocalist of the band, Neil Starr, is the only “outsider” (so to speak), and performs quite well. Motörhead fans expecting that “grit” found often in tracks penned by Lemmy may be surprised to hear Campbell opting for more of a catchy Hard Rock soundscape. There’s still attitude and rebellion to be found, but Campbell and sons make a successful stab at forming their own sound and personality in this debut EP. Whether or not you’re a Lemmy or Motörhead fan, you owe it to yourself to give Phil and his (bastard) sons a close listen.

Dan is a former partner at Metal Express Radio, and also served as a reviewer, photographer and interviewer on occasions. Based out of Indianapolis, USA he was first turned on to Hard Rock music in the mid-1970s when he purchased Deep Purple's Machine Head as his first album. He was immediately enthralled with the powerful guitar sound and pronounced drumbeat, and had to get more! His collection quickly expanded to include as many of Heavy Rock bands of the time that he could get his hands on, such as Ted Nugent, Judas Priest, and Black Sabbath, to name just a few.
