Interview with Gore (Horrified)

Horrified

The voice and founder of the Greek Metalband Horrified answered MER questions regarding the rerelease of their debut album In the Garden of the Unearthly Delights.

Metal Express Radio:
Please give us in brief Horrified’s biography.

Gore:
I (Gore) started the band back in 1989. Since then many members have changed, but what gave Horrified its unique sound was by our composer Stavros. The early nineties found us having a couple of small record deals, releasing a 7” EP, a 12” EP, and our full LP In The Garden of The Unearthly Delights. We quit for 5 years after that, and we reunited in 1998, releasing Animal, which is our second album. 2002 Ddeus Diabolus Inversus and now a re-release of our debut.

MER:
In the promo sheet it is stated that Horrified is the most underrated band of the Greek Metal scene. Is there a reason for that?

Gore:
You should ask the one who wrote it! I suspect it’s from our Public Relations department of Black Lotus.

MER:
What is the situation in the Greek Metal scene? Do you think that the Greek Metalheads are unfair when it comes to native bands?

Gore:
No, I don’t think they are, as a matter of fact, I believe that the Greek Metalheads are much more mature compared to the Greek Metal bands.

MER:
How did you come to the decision of re-releasing In the Garden of the Unearthly Delights?

Gore:
The idea was first expressed from Black Lotus records. I personally love this album because it means a lot to me in terms of music and lyrics, and it also reminds me of unique moments of my youth.

MER:
Did you ever think of re-recording the album?

Gore:
It crossed my mind, but this would be sacrilege to my eyes. This album vibrates because of its original recording. To me it had to be left as it was cause by re-recording it, we would certainly have had a better sound, but at the same time, certain feelings of the original would be lost.

MER:
What are the differences between the current Horrified sound with that of the In the Garden of the Unearthly Delights era?

Gore:
Now the feelings are of anger and raw brutality … back then it was more lyrical, more atmospheric.

MER:
Can you describe the Horrified sound?

Gore:
Full of anger, brain-melting, pounding Death Metal.

MER:
What are your major music influences?

Gore:
It varies from time to time. Nowadays, it’s anything fresh in the Metal scene either in the US or Europe. We also love film music.

MER:
What is the band’s current lineup?

Gore:
Gore-Vocals, Stavros-Guitar, Thanos-Bass, Fotis-Drums.

MER:
How did you all come together?

Gore:
Well, this lineup had many stages until it was formed. The original one was formed along with the band in a party in Zoumperi where everybody was drunk! I was 13 years old!

MER:
Are you in the making of a new album?

Gore:
Yes we are slowly but steadily.

MER:
Can you give us some information about it?

Gore:
It’s along the lines of Deus Diabolus Inversus but with more modern parts.

MER:
What is your composing process?

Gore:
Stavros or Fotis will call, I will drop by and they will play me a tune on the acoustic guitar, and we will work it from there.

MER:
You’ve been more than 15 years in the music business. Are you satisfied? Do you have any regrets?

Gore:
I’m not satisfied, I will be when I stop. As for regrets, not really.

MER:
What advice would you give to a freshly formed band?

Gore:
Be true, find your own sound.

MER:
What are your personal influences?

Gore:
It’s a mix of everything that is taking part in my life. From music to human relations, films, family, etc.

MER:
Give us your best singer list.

Gore:
Corey Taylor(Slipknot), Tom Araya(Slayer), and Max Cavalera(Soulfly)

MER:
What do you do for a living?

Gore:
I’m a 3D animator.

MER:
How difficult, financially speaking, is it to be in a Metal band?

Gore:
It’s not difficult, it’s simply impossible, if you don’t have a day job, forget about it.

MER:
What can we expect from Horrified in the future?

Gore:
Another album somewhere in 2007

MER:
Thanks for your time.

Gore:
The pleasure is all mine.

About Dr. Dimitris Kontogeorgakos 150 Articles
Dimitris was a reviewer and interviewer here at Metal Express Radio. He has a diploma in Physics, a Masters in Medical Physics and a doctorate dimploma in Nuclear Medicine (this is the reason for his Dr. title). He was given his first Heavy Metal tape at the age of 12 which was a compilation entitled Scandinavian Metal Attack. The music immediately drew his attention and there he was listening to the first Iron Maiden album, trying to memorize the names of the band members. That was it! After some years, he stopped recording tapes and started buying vinyl records, spending every penny in the local record shop. The first live concert he attended was Rage co-headlining with Running Wild.
