Australian metalcore band Ocean Sleeper are set to release their second album entitled Peace When I’m Dead on August 21st. Ocean Sleeper’s vocalist Karl Spiessl spoke with Metal Express Radio about their upcoming album, touring internationally, and more. Check out the chat below!
MER: Ocean Sleeper are set to release their sophomore album Peace When I’m Dead on August 21st, what can you tell fans about the upcoming release?
Spiessl: This album is a huge step forward for Ocean Sleeper. We worked so hard to create a cohesive defining piece of music and not just 11 singles. It still has the Ocean Sleeper you love but with more growth and depth.
MER: How was the writing and recording process, being your second album?
Spiessl: This album gave us the chance to really explore our writing process. We were able to collaborate in LA with producers Jon Lundin and Curt Martin then in Portland with Jeff Dunne. We then finished the album in Melbourne at our guitarist Ionei Heckenberg’s home studio. We sent everything from there to Jeff to Mix/Master. As we have spent the last few years dropping EPs, it was great to dive into a big piece of music and take the growth of the band’s sound even further.
MER: How would you compare Peace When I’m Dead to your first album Don’t Leave Me This Way?
Spiessl: To me everything is much more perfected and developed. We are so much better at writing music compared to then.
MER: Ocean Sleeper started touring last month in Europe, and will be going non stop around the world until early 2027, how has the touring been so far?
Spiessl: We have been loving it! The band only started touring internationally last year and we are stoked to keep doing it as much as we have been.
MER: You’ll be joining bands for future tour dates such as Parkway Drive, Nevertel, and Catch your Breath, what are your expectations on sharing the stage with them?
Spiessl: We just wrapped up touring Europe with Nevertel, they are great guys and were super accommodating. We can’t wait to bring them to Australia with us then return with them to the USA. A lot of great bands to share the stage with and we are just very thankful for the opportunities.
MER: Is there anyone you hope to tour with and why?
Spiessl: We would love to one day tour with Architects or Bring Me The Horizon. We all love those bands!
MER; Is there anywhere you hope to play live that you haven’t?
Spiessl: We hope one day we can play on the Warped tour in America or Download festival in the UK!
MER: What are your hopes for the future of Ocean Sleeper?
Spiessl: We just want to keep making music and playing it around the world for as long as possible!
