It’s no surprise that people’s attention span nowadays is not very good. With that in mind, it made sense for American melodic hard rock band Giant not to hesitate when releasing a follow-up to their previous studio album, Shifting Time (2022). The new album is called, Stand and Deliver (2025), and will be released on May 16 through Frontiers Music Srl. Only a three-year gap, which is quite good considering there was a 12-year gap between Shifting Time and Promise Land (2010). As a treat for the hardcore fans, former guitarist and lead vocalist Dann Huff co-wrote a few songs on the new album: “Time to Call It Love,” “Holdin’ on for Dear Life,” and “Paradise Found.” While Dann is no longer in Giant, his spirit lives on through the current band lineup consisting of Kent Hilli on lead vocals, Jimmy Westerlund on guitars, original member Mike Brignardello on bass guitar, and co-founder David Huff on drums.

Strike While the Iron Is Hot

“A Night to Remember” is so melodic and catchy. In fact, if listeners close their eyes, they’d think it’s a long lost gem from the ‘80s. “Hold the Night” is upbeat and fun, further complemented by Westerlund’s tasteful guitar chops. “Beggars Can’t Be Choosers” is a ballsy, fist pumping anthem that’s perfect for blasting down a highway. The lyrics encourage listeners to put their brave face on, and tackle the world with confidence and dignity. The title track is edgy and filled with so much attitude; it’s reminiscent of modern Europe. The band with Joey Tempest, not the continent.

Similar to “A Night to Remember,” “Time to Call It Love” sounds like an ‘80s classic. It’s got all the necessary factors for a hair metal gem such as big keyboards, a memorable chorus, irresistible hooks, and passionate lead vocals, courtesy of Hilli. “Holdin’ on for Dear Life” sounds like it would be a lot of fun to play live because it’s got that old school rock ‘n’ roll feel and it grooves hard. The album closer, “Pleasure Dome,” has a big, infectious, sing-along chorus that’s impossible to deny. That one is also reminiscent of modern Europe.

A Pleasant and Fun Listening Experience

Going back to Hilli, his vocals are absolutely stunning on the record. If it weren’t for him, who knows if Giant would’ve had the motivation to make another record that quickly. The production on the album fits the band well. It’s a very current, ‘80s style production. The whole band sounds fantastic, especially Westerlund, who replaces John Roth on guitars due to schedule conflicts.

Final Assessment

Overall, Stand and Deliver is an excellent addition to Giant’s catalog. People can say all they want about how bands shouldn’t continue without certain members, but as long as the band are happy doing what they do and they continue to make new music (rather than rely on old hits), then who cares! Besides, there are a lot of factors that contribute to band members leaving, but it’s not worth getting into that drama now. For those who want fun and tasteful melodic rock music, give Giant’s Stand and Deliver a chance!
