Project Genesis is the new release from Northern Ireland based Symphonic Metal band Ravenlight. The band features John Connor on guitar, and keyboards, Mike Bugajski on drums, and Rebecca Feeney on vocals.

The production of Project Genesis is pretty solid. At first blush, the vocals seem a bit too loud, but the pieces sound good. The performances vary. The drums are very good and do a nice job of driving energy. The rhythm guitar is tight and crisp. The keyboards form the majority of the melodic content, and they are lush and layered for the most part. The vocalist has impressive range and command, but rarely leaves her very airy timbre for more powerful territory typically expected in Symphonic Metal. It leaves some of the tracks a little flat. The lead guitar is underwhelming for this style of music, even pitchy in places. Check out the end of “Strong Enough To Fall” for an example of both.

“Echoes” is one of the better tracks on Project Genesis. “The Spell” is another. There are lots of good pieces on this record. Strong songs, strong lyrics, and strong performances. The weaknesses in the most out front aspects really are the undoing of an otherwise solid record.

Stevie was a reviewer here at Metal Express Radio. He is currently the lead guitarist for Melodic Rock band Red Reign, based in Richmond, Virginia, USA. Red Reign toured with Tesla in 2017, and shared the stage with Dokken, FireHouse, Lita Ford, Kix, Quiet Riot, and others at various dates around the US in 2018. Stevie heard his first KISS record at the age of 6 and was immediately hooked on Rock and Roll guitar. Over the course of years his tastes evolved, graduating from KISS to Ozzy and Van Halen; and then into Hair Metal. Over time, harder and faster music drew him. Bands like Metallica, Pantera, and Anthrax led the way, and Killswitch Engage took him over the top. Stevie has a deep passion for the guitar, not only playing them, but building them as well.
