Although there are a fair amount of them, Slovenia isn’t a country known for its high-profile Metal acts; LastDayHere (yes, all one word) is one of the newer ones, having formed a couple of years back. The fivesome recorded a couple of demos prior to the release of their full-length independent debut, From Pieces Created, which was released in late 2007. The line-up that plays on the 10-song, 35-minute From Pieces Created is: Marko Duplisak, vocals; Uros Borsic and Jure Gorjanc, guitars; Tomi Senveter, bass; and Mohor Mlakar, drums.

LastDayHere plays a grinding style of Modern Heavy Metal, with plenty of heavy riffs and deep rhythms accompanied by a groove-filled bottom end, with the forceful vocals of Duplisak topping things off. Everything is nice and heavy, but the songs still have decent melodies and are catchy enough, even though none of them are really fast. Duplisak is a decent singer with good energy, and he livens up some of Last Day Here‘s tracks with a few well-placed screams and shouts. Duplisak’s command of English is quite good too, and while the lyrics aren’t brilliant, they do the job.

If you were looking for a band to compare LastDayHere to, they sound something like Disturbed, albeit a bit less radio-friendly. Still, songs like “Standing In Dark” and “Deep Down Surrounded” wouldn’t sound out of place on the heavier Modern Rock radio dials.

LastDayHere are pretty good at what they do, even though they sound a lot like other Modern bands playing a similar style of music. From Pieces Created is still an enjoyable listen, though, thanks to a collection of songs, that although being rather similar in terms of tone, style, and speed are well-done: Bosic and Gorjanc came up with lots of good riffs and solid guitar parts for the album, and the rhythm section of Senveter and Mlakar provides a solid wall of sound.

Production-wise, From Pieces Created sounds pretty good: it’s hard to tell that this is an independently-recorded disc and not a major-label release.

If you like Modern Metal, you’ll probably enjoy LastDayHere’s From Pieces Created. It’s a solid collection of songs.

Gary was a reviewer here at Metal Express Radio, based out of the small Ontario, Canada town of Sault Ste. Marie, right on the border of Michigan, USA. When it comes to Metal and Hard Rock, Gary likes quite a few different bands, from stalwarts like Iron Maiden and Judas Priest, to newer, hard-hitting groups such as Primal Fear, Hammerfall, and Paragon. Other favorites include the likes of Nightwish, Running Wild, Therion, Accept, Stratovarius, Dream Evil, Helloween, Rammstein, Dirty Looks, Crimson Glory, Tristania, and Gamma Ray. He thinks AC/DC deserves a paragraph all their own though.
