ULI JON ROTH (Live)

It’s hard to believe that 40 years have passed since former Scorpions guitarist Uli Jon Roth stood on stage with his fledgling Electric Sun outfit at the City Hall in Newcastle and performed arguably the best show of his life. Whether it was the momentum built up by the thousand strong petition raised by a couple of Geordie lasses to bring him to the City Hall that did it or the welcome he received on his first appearance in the region since leaving the Scorpions five years earlier it’s hard to say but whatever it was everything, just everything slipped perfectly into place leaving its mark on Roth and the two thousand fans packed into the venue. For that reason, Newcastle is always a special night in Roth’s tour schedule and tonight at the Riverside on the banks of the River Tyne, the place was packed. Ahead of the show, Roth promised Metal Express Radio that his set would feature songs from across his 50 year history including those much loved Scorpions classics to material from his Electric Sun days and also his solo work along with some new material and Roth certainly stuck to that promise. Opening with a sublime instrumental “Amadeus” Roth was quick to stamp his classical infused fretwork on the evening and this was one, classy start to a show stretching well over two hours split into two parts. With the first focussing on his Electric Sun and solo material. Hot on its heels came a couple of Electric Sun numbers with the self-titled song followed by a brilliant “Cast Away Your Chains” before a new instrumental “The Crying” was unveiled as Roth’s Sky guitar soared and swooped with a melodic beauty. A rare outing for “Enola Gay-Hiroshima Today” complete with cacophonous whammy bar dive bombing …READ MORE

ULI JON ROTH (Live at The Think Tank, Newcastle, U.K., October 23, 2014)
Interviews

ULI JON ROTH: “I Didn’t Think That The Music Would Be Still So Loved 50 Years Later”

You’ll be over in the UK soon on a 9 date UK tour. Are you looking forward to playing over here again? I’m looking forward to it very much. It’s been a while so it will be great to be back. It’s good to see you back in Newcastle on 26th November. You played one of your legendary shows at Newcastle City Hall in on 21st May 1983. That’s over 40 years ago. How did that go by so quickly? I have no idea how that time has passed so quickly. Newcastle was always one of my most important places going right back to those Electric Sun days. It’s always been great for me. That show in 1983 at the City Hall was one of the best ever Electric Sun shows. I remember it well, that evening was magical. It was like if me and the audience were as one. I’ve played many shows in my career but Newcastle in ’83 stands out. There is a video of that show that we put out called ‘Historic Performances’. It is bootleg quality but it’s very watchable. That show took place because a couple of local fans wrote to you and persuaded you to play in Newcastle. What happened there? Two girls made a petition and they got hundreds of people to sign and that persuaded a promoter to book me to play at the City Hall. I’ll never forget that. Have you enjoyed coming back over the following years? Because of that show in 1983 I have a really warm feeling towards Newcastle people. When I first started Electric Sun I had no idea that I had such a following. I was blown away by the response in England but Newcastle was in its own league. You have over 50 years …READ MORE

Klaus Meine and Matthias Jabs of the SCORPIONS (Live at the Moda Center, Portland, OR, USA, October 9, 2022)

SCORPIONS (Live)

Scorpions Haven’t Lost Their Sting Since the band released their first album in 1970, the Scorpions have enjoyed a longevity that many bands hope for, and few can sustain. With their show at the Moda Center in Portland, Oregon on Sunday night they more than proved they still have “it”, as the whole crowd stood the entire performance, showing their love and support. As the band nears the end of their U.S. leg of the Rock Believer tour, they show no signs of slowing down. Band founder and guitarist Rudolf Schenker seemed to be having the time of his life as the band hit the stage with the opener “Gas in the Tank” off of the new album. Vocalist Klaus Meine was also all smiles as he greeted the crowd of avid fans, while still giving a great performance and singing to perfection. Standing Room Only The band definitely did not disappoint the fans as they next went straight into “Make it Real,” one of their classic hits that helped to cement them into the big time of Hard Rock and early Heavy Metal. The always stunning guitar work of Matthias Jabs was mesmerizing, as he effortlessly performed hit after hit. His classic talk-box solos on “The Zoo” sent chills down the spine. Drummer Mickey Dee (ex-King Diamond, ex-Motörhead) played one of the most amazing drum solos, showing he hasn’t lost a step and continues to be one of the top drummers in Heavy Metal. Rock Believers One thing that this fan took away from the Scorpions concert, that not only are they still true Rock believers, but their adoring fans are as well. From the masses singing along on “Winds of Change,” to the overwhelming ovation for the encores of “No One Like You” and “Rock You Like A …READ MORE

SCORPIONS - Rock Believer
Album Reviews

SCORPIONS – Rock Believer

No need to pray for they’re not dying For their 19th studio album, Scorpions renew their tradition of slightly subversive artwork. Rock Believer plays of the unholy alliance of Hard Rock and Religion. Even if there is nothing left of very subversive in Hard Rock these days. Perhaps it is because rockers do not scare the parents anymore… and many younger fans have discovered the great classics like Scorpions by browsing through the vinyl collection of their parents. In place of catechism, this is the taste for music that has been passed on. Scorpions’ last album dates back from 2015. After a most impressive career, they could have chosen the path of retirement with no ill feelings. But no, Scorpions is back with a solid new record (11 songs + 4 bonus songs and an acoustic version.) That’s the kind of apology easily accepted for letting their flock without new material for so long.) Rock the church Rock Believer is a mix of powerful Hard Rock anthems and softer tunes that made their renown. Ballads or hits, all of the songs are well worked and bring different atmospheres. They are not just there to fill in the gaps. The opening trio ” Gas In The Tank”, “Roots In My Boots” and “Knock ’em Dead” will effectively prove to you that Scorpions is still very much inspired. It seems this album is made to set fire to the stage. It is seething with communicative energy. While they still have a very classic sound. Well, Klaus Meine’s voice remains unmistakable, even if altered by age. The songs still have a modern touch and aren’t rehashed. But if you are yearning for the past, the riff of “Rock Believer” is laying thick on the nostalgic, but it’s a good kind of nostalgic. The …READ MORE

Tales from a Metalhead: Chapter 12: “Damn the Machines”

Some of you might find this chapter a bit nerdy, but I think it’s important to talk a bit about technology. Recording devices have played a highly important role when doing interviews throughout the years. In the 80s everything was edited on 1/4″ reel-to-reel tapes. …READ MORE …READ MORE …READ MORE …READ MORE …READ MORE …READ MORE …READ MORE …READ MORE …READ MORE …READ MORE …READ MORE …READ MORE …READ MORE …READ MORE …READ MORE …READ MORE …READ MORE …READ MORE …READ MORE
