Return To The East Live is the new release from iconic American Hard Rock/Hair Metal legends Dokken.  This new record is the first to feature the original line up of vocalist Don Dokken, guitarist George Lynch, bassist Jeff Pilson, and drummer Mick Brown in over 20 years, and was recorded during a 6 show tour of Japan.  These six dates were the only shows scheduled by this lineup, with current Dokken members guitarist Jon Levin and bassist Chris McCarvill rejoining the tour immediately after.

Return To The East Live features 15 songs, including 12 of Dokken’s biggest hit songs from their heyday, such as “Dream Warriors”, “Breaking The Chains”, “In My Dreams”, and “Alone Again”, along with 2 acoustic versions of classics “Heaven Sent” and “Will The Sun Rise”, and one brand new track but the classic lineup, “It’s Another Day”.  Lynch, Pilson, and Brown seem not to have lost a step, turning in razor sharp performances.  As for Dokken himself, he sounds tired.  The vocals lack push and passion.  Perhaps he has lost some range.  Perhaps he has lost some passion for the project.  For die hard Dokken fans, hearing the greatest hits by the original lineup is a treat, but there is nothing earth shattering to be found here.  Even the new song seems to reflect this tiredness, even the new track, aptly titled “It’s Another Day’  And so it is.

About Stevie Shred 166 Articles
Stevie was a reviewer here at Metal Express Radio. He is currently the lead guitarist for Melodic Rock band Red Reign, based in Richmond, Virginia, USA. Red Reign toured with Tesla in 2017, and shared the stage with Dokken, FireHouse, Lita Ford, Kix, Quiet Riot, and others at various dates around the US in 2018. Stevie heard his first KISS record at the age of 6 and was immediately hooked on Rock and Roll guitar. Over the course of years his tastes evolved, graduating from KISS to Ozzy and Van Halen; and then into Hair Metal. Over time, harder and faster music drew him. Bands like Metallica, Pantera, and Anthrax led the way, and Killswitch Engage took him over the top. Stevie has a deep passion for the guitar, not only playing them, but building them as well.
