Finland’s Force Majeure are back in action with a new vocalist and new album entitled, The Rise Of Starlit Fires. What a wonderfully Power Metal title!

Although Force Majeure only officially debuted back in 2008 with Frozen Chambers, this new release, marking their 3rd, has the sound of a much more seasoned band. New vocalist Marcus Lang fits like a hand-forged glove and has a versatile and commanding voice. He sings the lyrics as if he’s reading the Ten Commandments; “Apocalyptic Hearts” is an excellent example of his range of timbre.

Production-wise, The Rise Of Starlit Fires is sometimes a bit sparse, but there is enough well used reverb to fill up any gaps between keyboard pads and guitar work. The melodies used, both in the vocals and guitar lines, are a bit on the simple side. While this is common in Power Metal, there is still some unused room within The Rise Of Starlit Fires‘ tracks which could have been brimming with more exciting and expansive tonal experiments. To offset this however, there are some fascinating synth tones and effects used and the overall sonic delivery is atmospheric, yet powerful.

In general, this is a fine effort in the Power Metal genre from a band with a unique sound and well-honed style. Highlights include “Apocalyptic Hearts”, “Gemini Rising”, and the fun-filled “Subarctic Showdown”!
