Pretty Maids may indeed be one of the most underrated bands in the history of Melodic Metal.  You’d think that after a number of quality releases (including several since the turn of the century), these chaps from Denmark would reap the rewards of their efforts … but sometimes the industry is unfair and unkind.

Pretty Maids latest offering is entitled Kingmaker, and topically, it seems to in several ways ask the question “why” to a number of “that’s just the way it is” situations in life and in society.  The topics can be both inspirational and deflating at the same time … which is also a strength and weakness within this album’s music.  In the majority of the tracks, the band completely ROCKS with some energy-producing Melodic Metal … but at other times, the soundscapes become sappy, saturated, and very Melodic Rock-ish, which can make you wonder “why” such musical tangents were undertaken.  This could have been an outstanding Melodic Metal album without the Melodic Rock diversions … or an outstanding Melodic Rock album if the band dedicated itself to that direction.  As it stands, however, it’s an above average mix of the two … worth your time, but with a tinge of disappointment just the same.
