Metal Express Radio’s Rating Scale

10.0:         Cannot be improved! Perfect, instant classic! Essential in any record collection.
9.5 – 9.9:  Fantastic, spectacular and outstanding!
9.0 – 9.4:  Amazing release! It just lacks that little extra spice to make it perfect.
8.5 – 8.9:  Exceptional release! Will likely rank among top ten albums of the year.
8.0 – 8.4:  Great release! It has many different qualities.
7.5 – 7.9:  Above average! It is an enjoyable release.
7.0 – 7.4:  It is not brilliant, but has many strong points.
6.0 – 6.9:  It has its moments, but is not that strong.
5.0 – 5.9:  Slightly above average, does not stand out. Good outweighs bad by just a little.
4.0 – 4.9:  Just below average, bad outweighs good by just a little.
3.0 – 3.9:  Mediocre. There might be a song or a performance that is enjoyable, but that is it.
2.0 – 2.9:  Very weak! There might be a light at the end of the tunnel, too many flaws.
1.0 – 1.9:  This release gives the word “terrible” new meaning.
0.1 – 0.9:  Awful! Avoid at all cost. There is nothing good to say about this release.

TARANTULA – Dream Maker

February 19, 2001 Frode Johnsrud Leave a comment
Tarantula from Portugal make me remember why I started to like hard rock music. I always have my prejudice when I get a CD from South Europe, and I was expecting band wagon shit. Oh …READ MORE

ELEMENTS OF FRICTION – Elements Of Friction

February 13, 2001 Frode Johnsrud Leave a comment
A band? A project? I don’t know, but what I do know, is that this album contains surprisingly good and catchy melodic-rock songs! And some might say that is a miracle in year 2001… Well …READ MORE

GOTTHARD – Homerun

January 29, 2001 Frode Johnsrud Leave a comment
The last album by the Swiss, Open, was a very good AOR record, even with a pretty hard edge to it. Homerun continues in the same way, but this time the band is not saved …READ MORE

VICIOUS RUMORS – Sadistic Symphony

Back to the roots, my ass! Okay, the songwriting is quite good, and this and that remind of the good old days, but that is mostly when this once premier American power metal outfit repeats …READ MORE

MAGNITUDE 9 – Reality In Focus

January 23, 2001 Frode Johnsrud Leave a comment
The first album, Chaos To Control from 1998, never found its way to my postbox, but Reality In Focus did, and I really can’t complain much. I had to give the new record from the band …READ MORE

FREEDOM CALL – Crystal Empire

January 22, 2001 Frode Johnsrud Leave a comment
The “German” speed metal can sometimes get you sick, mostly because the industry gives a deal to anyone trying to sound like Gamma Ray, Hammerfall or Rhapsody. Therefore, it is rare when you spot a …READ MORE

ATHENA – Twilight Of Days

January 19, 2001 Frode Johnsrud Leave a comment
From being an interesting power metal band with a bright future, these Italians are now trapped in German speed metal like so many others. German speed metal can be good, but then it requires more …READ MORE

PAUL DI’ANNO – The Beast Live

January 16, 2001 Frode Johnsrud Leave a comment
It’s been a long time since Paul fronted Iron Maiden, and for most metal fans, Iron Maiden is synonymous with Bruce Dickinson galloping all over the stage, in tight leather pants and operatic vocals. But, …READ MORE

ZAKK WYLDE’S BLACK LABEL SOCIETY – Alcohol Fueled Brewtality – Live!! Plus 5

January 16, 2001 Frode Johnsrud Leave a comment
This is a double disc, with one disc containing live recordings, and one disc containing studio recordings. The live recording is sounding muddy, not very kick ass…and Zakk telling the audience (“Make some fucking noise”): …READ MORE

MOTHER MERCY – Dancing With The Devil

January 1, 2001 Guest Writer Leave a comment
Any CD titled Dancing With the Devil reeks of ‘80s metal. The band who released the album, called Mother Mercy, wallows in that ‘80s metal vibe while somehow throwing in a bit of Godsmack right …READ MORE
