Dutch metal band Textures are back and have just released their seventh album entitled Genotype. Textures guitarist Joe Tal spoke with Metal Express Radio about their latest album, Textures reformation, their current tour with JINGER, and more. Check out the chat below!

Metal Express Radio: Textures had disbanded back in 2018, what was it that inspired the reformation?

Tal: I guess that musically, we had something different to “deliver”. I assume that if we haven’t disbanded, we’d probably release another album like Phenotype (which isn’t bad) but this is not really what we are about. So, yeah. Different musical ideas.

MER: You have just released a new album entitled Genotype on January 23rd, what can you tell fans about your latest release?

Tal: It’s much more song-based and minimalistic than its predecessors. One of the very first things you hear is that the production is bigger, modern, and the presence of the synthesizer is much more noticeable.

MER: How was it writing and recording for the first time since 2016?

Tal: This time around, we had a small writing team of around 3 people, who wrote the majority of the music and lyrics. A small, dedicated team, basically to speed things up.

MER: Phenotype was extremely well received, was there any pressure having to follow up on that?

Tal: No, not really. We knew already back then, that if we’ll do another album, it’ll be different than Phenotype so that immediately took all the pressure away.

MER: What do you see as plans for yourself and Textures to promote the album?

Tal: We’re currently on tour across Europe supporting JINJER together with Unprocessed. So, more of that!

MER: Is there anyone that you hope to tour with and why?

Tal: Devin Townsend, Opeth, Karnivool, Gojira, Meshuggah … why? Isn’t it obvious?

MER: Is there anywhere you hope to play live that you haven’t and why?

Tal: Australia for sure! It’s still in our bucket list. For years we’ve heard great things about the people and the places.

MER: How would you compare Textures now to where you were as a band in 2016?

Tal: It’s just a great group of people. Our personal connection is stronger than ever. Maturity makes everything nicer.

MER: Out of Textures seven albums, what is one you would suggest to a new fan and why?

Tal: I’d say Dualism and then from there, if you want it heavy, Silhouettes. If you’re looking for a more approachable album, Genotype.
