DAVID GROSSMAN (NEW MISERABLE EXPERIENCE, EX-ROSETTA): “I Think That Each Song Shows Different Sides Of The Band”

The image is stylized with atmospheric purple and blue lighting that creates ghostly motion-blur effects around the figures. The men are dressed in casual streetwear, including beanies, a flannel shirt, and graphic tees. One member on the left wears a black long-sleeved shirt featuring the band "Soft Kill" and the word "CANNIBAL". The band members look directly at the camera with serious expressions.

Alternative rock band New Miserable Experience are set to release their second album entitled Gild The Lily on January 23rd. New Miserable Experience’s vocalist/bassist David Grossman (ex-Rosetta) spoke with Metal Express Radio about the formation of the band, their upcoming album, members other current/former bands, and more. Check out the chat below!

Metal Express Radio: How did the formation of New Miserable Experience come about?

Grossman: Josh and I (Dave) had a brief metalcore project that put out one record back in 2012. We had conversations about doing something again at some point but the timing never lined up. The conversations about doing another music project started to gain some steam in 2021. We asked a few people but ultimately it just made sense to get Bruce and Brett involved. After the EP came out in 2023 we asked Brody to join up and we wrote/released our first full length, Absent Lovers.

MER: Members of New Miserable Experience have former ties with bands such as Revocation, Rivers of Nihil, and Rosetta, do you feel fans of the bands mention will also be into New Miserable Experience?

Grossman: It’s always hard to know because we sound so vastly different then all of those bands. I do think that all of our current and previous bands have extremely open minded fan bases.

MER: How would you describe similarities and differences of New Miserable Experience to the members previous bands?

Grossman: I always feel like this is a bit of a difficult question to answer. I think that we are all taking things we’ve done in our other projects and we are reframing it inside an experimental pop band. I think that there’s been elements of things like Jeff Buckley, Radiohead, Portishead, Massive Attack, The Cure, Depeche Mode, Tears for Fears, etc. within our previous bands but obviously those are framed within heavy music projects.

MER: You’re set to release your new album entitled Gild The Lily on January 23rd, what can you tell fans about the upcoming release?

Grossman: If they’ve listened to Absent Lovers they know that we experiment with some different sounds. On this record we pushed that even further. As cliche as it sounds this is our strongest collection of songs so far.

MER: How was the writing and recording process, being your second full length album with New Miserable Experience?

Grossman: The process was very similar but we are figuring out how to work more efficiently with each other. The initial musical ideas come from Josh or Brody and we build from there. Josh is the main person responsible for keeping everything organized.

MER: You’ve released three songs from the new album so far, do you feel they give fans an idea on what to expect from the full length?

Grossman: I think that each song shows different sides of the band but still remain within the experimental pop music sound that we are doing.

MER: What do you see as plans for yourself and New Miserable Experience after the album is released?

Grossman: At this point we are strictly a studio project but we have had some conversations about playing a few shows next year. We will definitely work on some new songs, we already have a couple ideas.

MER: Is there anyone you hope to tour with and why?

Grossman: My absolute dream tour right now would be to do a run with Puma Blue, Crippling Alcoholism and The Black Queen. I absolutely adore both of those projects. To open up for both those bands would be absolutely incredible.

MER: Is there anywhere you hope to play live and why?

Grossman: I would love to play some shows in Australia. All of us have had an incredible time in Australia with our other bands but honestly we would be stoked to play anywhere at this point. The next show is the first show for the band.

MER: What are some of your favorite releases of 2025?

Grossman: My favorites from 2025 are the following: Crippling Alcoholism – Camgirl, Whirr – Raw Blue (technically this came out in 2024), Rivers of Nihil – Rivers of Nihil , Crushed – No Scope, Puma Blue – Desire and Croak Dream (2 singles from the upcoming album), Som – Let The Light In, Victor Jones – I Get Hurt, Bomb A Lil Joy – Baby Blue, Manslaughter 777 – God’s World, Amulets – Not Around But Through.
