( votes)After fans begged them for years to release a Christmas album, Christian metal band Stryper got to work and finally released their long-awaited Christmas album titled, The Greatest Gift of All (2025). The album features five cover songs and five original songs. One of the original songs dates back to 1985, “Reason for the Season,” which was released as a single back in the day. Don’t expect anything like AC/DC’s “Mistress for Christmas” because they’re not that kind of band. Despite that, Stryper remain firm in their belief that Christian music can actually rock! The lineup that plays on the album includes Michael Sweet on lead vocals, and lead and rhythm guitars; Robert Sweet on drums and percussion, Oz Fox on lead and rhythm guitars, and backing vocals; and Perry Richardson on bass guitar and backing vocals.
In the True Spirit of Christmas
There’s a charm to Stryper’s The Greatest Gift of All because the music is wholesome and innocent. Christmas can be a very stressful time with gift shopping, avoiding frantic crowds at the mall, wrapping presents, planning family gatherings, and cooking holiday meals. However, this record is a very humble listening experience and it is a good reminder that the gifts and extravagant food are not what Christmas is about. The title track is a beautifully written midtempo rocker about the true spirit of Christmas. Also, the bell chimes were a nice touch! “Go Tell It on the Mountain” is a lot of fun, and the instrumentation is calming and pleasant.
“Still the Light” and “Reason for the Season” are insanely catchy, headbanging, and heavy midtempo rockers. “On This Holy Night” is a bit more tasteful with a groove that’s impossible to deny. Everyone knows “Joy to the World” because it’s a Christmas classic with a big choir and massive horns, but Stryper’s version strips it back and turns the song into a lovely acoustic number. There is an electric guitar solo, however, and it’s pleasing on the ears.
The Bad and the Ugly
Not all of the covers worked, unfortunately. “Little Drummer Boy” is a sleeper that goes on and on forever. For a song that’s centered on drums, the drumming is plain and dull. “Silent Night” is peaceful, but it’s not different from the original version. They could’ve turned it into a full heavy metal banger, but no, what a wasted opportunity. “Winter Wonderland,” originally released alongside “Reason for the Season” in 1985, is a fun number, but there’s not enough balls. Actually, that can be said for the entire album; there’s no balls. Then again, it’s a Christmas album from a Christian metal band.
Final Assessment
If not done correctly, Christmas albums can be a death wish for rock bands. However, Stryper fans will find stuff to enjoy on The Greatest Gift of All and as mentioned before, it’s a humble listening experience. Who knows, maybe Stryper do have balls for sticking to their Christian metal roots after all these years. For those who don’t like Christian metal, fair enough because everyone has different tastes. Be prepared to dive into the music with an open mind and don’t expect the heaviest Christmas album to ever walk the face of Earth. For those who are interested, give Stryper’s The Greatest Gift of All a chance!
