There is an old mystical proverb which states that “Whosoever treads upon the woven dreams of Persia shall awaken melodies the soul has yet to fathom.”

With a rather splendid rug laid across the stage on The Cluny in Newcastle it looked as though Dutch retro Rockers, DeWolff may well see that proverb coming to life.

From their ten studio albums released across a period of 15 or so years, DeWolff, have established themselves as one of the leading purveyors of classy, Southern Blues both funky and supremely soulful harking back to the golden era of the likes of The Allman Brothers and Lynyrd Skynyrd. It was no surprise when their latest album Muscle Shoals, saw them record in the heartland and channeling the spirit of those very bands into their music. Tonight promised to be a very special evening.

Kicking off with an opening salvo of “Nightrain” and “Heart Stoppin’ Kind Of Show” certainly got things off to a lively start with Pablo van de Poel armed with a rather tasty Gibson Firebird and he certainly knew how to use it delivering some quite magnificent solos along the way. The wonderful organic groove of “In Love” with Soul drenched joint lead vocals from Pablo and Luka van de Poel proved to be an early set highlight.

This was absolutely wonderful, old school retro Rock full of soul and passion played through vintage equipment so retaining the authenticity of a bygone era. Pablo may well be a serious musician but that didn’t stop some sharp witted banter between the songs bringing a dash of humour to the night.

The musicianship was off the scale with stunning interplay between Pablo and Hammond organist, Robin Piso with some quite phenomenal drumming from Luka which saw songs such as “Rosita” stretched out to a 30 minute super jam with Pablo heading out into the crowd, up the stairs, over to the bar and onto the raised area at the side of the stage making sure that everyone in the hall felt part of the show.

It certainly looked like that old Persian rug worked its magic on DeWolff in Newcastle last night.

Mick is a reviewer and photographer here at Metal Express Radio, based in the North-East of England. He first fell in love with music after hearing Jeff Wayne's spectacular The War of the Worlds in the cold winter of 1978. Then in the summer of '79 he discovered a copy of Kiss Alive II amongst his sister’s record collection, which literally blew him away! He then quickly found Van Halen I and Rainbow's Down To Earth, and he was well on the way to being rescued from Top 40 radio hell! Over the ensuing years, he's enjoyed the Classic Rock music of Rush, Blue Oyster Cult, and Deep Purple; the AOR of Journey and Foreigner; the Pomp of Styx and Kansas; the Progressive Metal of Dream Theater, Queensrÿche, and Symphony X; the Goth Metal of Nightwish, Within Temptation, and Epica, and a whole host of other great bands that are too numerous to mention. When he's not listening to music, he watches Sunderland lose more football (soccer) matches than they win, and occasionally, if he has to, he goes to work as a property lawyer.
