GLENN HUGHES – Chosen

The cover art for Glenn Hughes - Chosen features a moody photograph of a rocky seashore at sunset or sunrise. Silhouetted dark rocks fill the foreground and water reflects the light of a bright, small sun low in the sky, with the artist's name and album title in blocky, metallic lettering at the top.

Glenn Hughes hardly needs an introduction, but his story is one worth repeating. Known as the “Voice of Rock,” Hughes first came to prominence in the early ‘70s with Trapeze before joining Deep Purple during their Burn era, helping redefine the band’s sound alongside David Coverdale. Since then, Hughes has built a legacy that spans countless collaborations with legends like Tony Iommi, Gary Moore, and Chad Smith, as well as stints in Black Country Communion, California Breed, and The Dead Daisies.

Now, after a nine–year gap since his last solo outing (Resonate, 2016), Hughes returns with Chosen, a record that wastes no time in proving why he remains one of the most respected voices in Rock and Metal. Fusing his signature blend of Hard Rock muscle, soulful grooves, and unmistakable vocal firepower, Chosen feels like both a continuation of his career and a statement that Hughes still has plenty left to say.

Production

Produced with a modern Hard Rock sheen, Chosen is crisp, punchy, and well-balanced without ever sounding sterile. Glenn’s vocals sit front and center—exactly where they belong—but the band behind him deserves just as much credit. Guitarist Soren Andersen provides both muscle and melodic flair, while Ash Sheehan’s drumming keeps everything tight, driving, and dynamic. Bob Fridzema’s keyboards add atmosphere and depth, enriching the arrangements without overwhelming them.

The production captures the energy of a band firing on all cylinders: big, clean guitar tones, a thunderous low end, and Hughes’ bass locking everything into place. Tracks like the heavy-hitting “The Lost Parade” and the groove-driven “My Alibi” demonstrate just how sharp the recording is. The title track “Chosen” and the soaring “In The Golden” stand out as some of the album’s best examples of Hughes’ knack for combining soulful melody with Hard Rock grit. It’s polished, yes, but never loses the human element—the warmth and passion are intact throughout.

Final Notes

Chosen is not just another record from a veteran artist; it’s a reaffirmation that Glenn Hughes is still at the top of his game. His voice remains a marvel—rich, powerful, and packed with emotion—and the songs themselves are both immediate and rewarding. While it doesn’t reinvent the wheel, it doesn’t need to: this is hard rock done right, with conviction and heart.

Highlights include the powerhouse title track, the atmospheric “In The Golden,” and the thunderous “The Lost Parade,” though the album as a whole is consistently engaging. For fans of Hughes, Deep Purple, or just soulful Hard Rock with teeth, Chosen delivers in spades.
