STARGAZER – Stone Cold Creature

An album cover for "Stargazer - Stone Cold Creature" depicts a fearsome, dark wolf-like creature in the center, snarling with its mouth open. Two intense, glowing blue laser beams shoot downwards from its eyes. The creature stands on a rocky, desolate landscape, with a large, full moon glowing brightly behind its head against a dark, cloudy, and moody night sky. The band's name, "STARGAZER," is in a jagged, futuristic font at the top, and the album title, "STONE COLD CREATURE," is in a simple white font at the bottom right. The overall image combines a fantasy creature with sci-fi elements.

Stargazer hails from Norway, and Stone Cold Creature marks their 4th full-length album (Mighty Music). For those unfamiliar with the band, Stargazer plays a mixture of Melodic Hard Rock and Melodic Rock in the vein of classic bands such as Journey, Styx, and Night Ranger.

Stone Cold Creature contains 14 tracks, which are all enjoyable listens in and of themselves. Tore Andre Helgemo has a voice that’s easy on the eardrums, and William Ernstsen cranks out some solid guitarwork that’s worth soaking in, and Svend Skogheim on drums along with Jomar Johansen on bass provide a nice rhythmic backdrop that’s well-placed in the production mix.

So, there you have it … Stone Cold Creature contains all the elements necessary that you’d want to hear in a great album. However, there’s something missing in these 14 tracks. Although all component parts are functioning as intended, when you mix it all together the album comes across as bland and unexciting … sort of like a taco with no hot sauce. Although there is nothing technically wrong with Stone Cold Creature, Stargazer gives the listener few reasons to want to return after an initial spin.

Dan is a reviewer at Metal Express Radio. Based out of Indianapolis, USA he was first turned on to Hard Rock music in the mid-1970s when he purchased Deep Purple's Machine Head as his first album. He was immediately enthralled with the powerful guitar sound and pronounced drumbeat, and had to get more! His collection quickly expanded to include as many of Heavy Rock bands of the time that he could get his hands on, such as Ted Nugent, Judas Priest, and Black Sabbath, to name just a few.
