( votes)Since forming in 2015, Reinforcer has been sharpening their steel, blending the anthemic bite of classic heavy metal with the grand sweep of power metal. After their well-received debut EP The Wanderer (2018), the Paderborn, Germany-based warriors struck again in 2021 with Prince of the Tribes on Scarlet Records, solidifying their reputation for cinematic storytelling, precision musicianship, and relentless energy. Frontman Logan Lexi’s commanding tenor and the band’s trademark dual-lead guitar work have made them a force worth watching. Now, they return for round two with Ice and Death, a nine-track journey that promises epic battles, mythical landscapes, and plenty of high-octane riffage.
Production & Sound
From the first strike of the drums, it’s clear Ice and Death was built for clarity and impact. Lasse Schmiedel’s double bass work is more than just speed—it’s creative, driving the songs forward with intricate patterns that avoid the cookie-cutter trap. Guitarists Tobias Schwarzer and Niclas Stappert are a locked-in twin attack, delivering soaring harmonies, razor riffs, and tasteful solo work that continues in the tradition of German power metal. New bassist Fabián “Fabo” Rodriguez settles into the lineup seamlessly, adding low-end depth without overpowering the mix. Logan Lexi’s voice is the banner at the front of this sonic army—strong, melodic, and commanding, whether delivering a rallying cry or an ominous tale. The production leans towards precision and balance, giving the listener space to appreciate the craftsmanship in every track.
Lyrics
“Dead Men Tell No Tales” draws from the rich lore of seafaring myth and pirate legend, pairing galloping Power Metal rhythms with imagery straight from the Jolly Roger’s heyday. Written by Luca Todorovic, the lyrics strike a balance between rousing battle cry and mythic farewell, framing the crew as the last of the free pirates, defiant to the end. Phrases like “Valiant men, take your last stand” and “Shanties be sung of the last pirates free” suggest a swan song for an outlaw brotherhood, while invoking figures like Calypso gives the song a touch of supernatural maritime folklore. The repeated “No storm can defeat us” doubles as both literal resilience at sea and symbolic resistance against tyranny. While the language stays within traditional pirate tropes—flintlocks, blades, freedom, ale—it’s delivered with enough conviction and melodic muscle to feel less like cliché and more like a rallying chant. The result is a lyrical journey that celebrates the romanticized spirit of piracy: fierce independence, loyalty to one’s crew, and the refusal to bow to any crown.
Final Notes
Ice and Death may not reinvent the power metal wheel, but it turns it with style, skill, and more than enough horsepower to win over genre fans. From the thunderous “Heir Of The Bear” to the dramatic title track and the storytelling punch of “Dead Men Tell No Tales,” Reinforcer proves they can craft memorable hooks and deliver them with conviction. This is a record steeped in the German power metal tradition, and while the band is still under the radar, Ice and Death shows they have the chops to run with the bigger names in the field. If you like your metal heroic, melodic, and performed with precision, this is well worth your time.
