NICKLAS SONNE – Electric Dreams

An illustrated album cover for "NICKLAS SONNE - Electric Dreams" depicts a long-haired man with a beard, dressed in a dark suit, passionately playing an electric guitar. He is illuminated by vibrant red and blue light, with his right arm raised towards the sky. Behind him, a large red sphere, resembling a planet or sun, pulses with energy, surrounded by a light blue ring. Lightning bolts strike downwards, and various small, stylized figures, some resembling ghosts or spirits, float around him. The overall impression is one of intense musical energy and a fantastical, almost cosmic, atmosphere.

Nicklas Sonne is a multi-instrumentalist virtuoso (guitars, bass, drums), vocalist, producer, and songwriter from Denmark. He’s been part of a host of Melodic and Progressive Metal bands, including Defecto and Pyramaze to name just a few. But this time around he’s compiled a true solo record entitled Electric Dreams released by Frontiers Music.

In his own words, Sonne admits Electric Dreams is a highly introspective compilation, covering personal ups and downs and various trials and tribulations throughout his life and career. Musically the songs on offer have their roots set mainly in the Melodic Metal subgenre. There are plenty of tasty riffs and driving rhythms, and Sonne shows he’s learned a thing or two along the way about how to handle himself in front of a microphone.

That said, from a musical standpoint Sonne’s solo album is a success and could certainly appeal to a rather large fan base. The negative here, unfortunately, are the personal lyrics and song topics. Many of the song lyrics seem to have been written to either targeted individuals or small groups who have been part of Sonne’s life. If you run in any of these circles, the lyrics probably have sublime meaning and conjure up all kinds of shared memories, but for the average listener the emotions motivating the lyrics are hard to relate to and are sort of like watching someone else’s home movies.

Dan is a reviewer at Metal Express Radio. Based out of Indianapolis, USA he was first turned on to Hard Rock music in the mid-1970s when he purchased Deep Purple's Machine Head as his first album. He was immediately enthralled with the powerful guitar sound and pronounced drumbeat, and had to get more! His collection quickly expanded to include as many of Heavy Rock bands of the time that he could get his hands on, such as Ted Nugent, Judas Priest, and Black Sabbath, to name just a few.
