Founded in 1974, Canadian hard rock band Helix have been running “wild in the streets” for the past five decades, with frontman Brian Vollmer, the only original member left, calling all the shots. After releasing two independent studio albums, the band finally found commercial success with No Rest for the Wicked (1983), which features “Heavy Metal Love.” However, the following record, Walkin’ the Razor’s Edge (1984), is where things really started to take off for them, thanks to their biggest hit, “Rock You.” Of course, when there’s success, there’s also tragedy. From the death of beloved guitarist Paul Hackman, to a revolving door of band members, Helix have seen it all. Now, they’re celebrating the release of Helix 50 – The Best Of (2025), a compilation album that sums up their history so far, and wraps it in a beautiful, gold bow. What makes this different from previous compilation albums is the inclusion of a brand new song, “Stand Up,” and a pumped up re-recording of “Rock You.”

Lana Teramae of Metal Express Radio had a chat with Vollmer about the band’s latest release, Helix 50 – The Best Of. They also talked about why rock is not dead, his thoughts on Blackberry Smoke, precious memories of the late Paul Hackman, former guitarist from the band’s classic ‘80s lineup; and more!

Helix 50 – The Best Of is available now and can be purchased through the band’s website, planethelix.com; Crown X Recordings, and rockpapermerch.com.

Check out the re-recorded version of “Rock You” from Helix 50 – The Best Of! The new version features Vollmer and bassist Daryl Gray, along with guest stars Phil X, Brent Fitz, and Todd Kerns.

She's always had a passion for music, but she didn't get into Hard Rock and Heavy Metal music until she discovered Rick Allen's story in the summer of 2019. She was inspired by his determination to play drums for Def Leppard again after losing his left arm in a car accident. From there, her tastes expanded to other bands such as AC/DC, Bon Jovi, Metallica, Judas Priest, Saxon, Cinderella, and Overkill. Aside from listening to music, she loves watching YouTube and writing on her personal blog.
