Death Of Roses is the 15th instrumental release from Tony MacAlpine. MacAlpine hit the shred guitar scene in 1986 with his first release, Edge Of Insanity, on the much vaunted Shrapnel Records label. Playing both guitars and keyboards, MacAlpine quickly rose through the ranks of shredders, recording not only his solo shred material, but working with many of the top musicians of the era on their projects, as well as one-off supergroup type records, and touring extensively with them, and as a member of Steve Vai’s band The Breed.

In short, Tony MacAlpine is no slouch. Highly regarded as one of the most influential Shred/Neoclassical guitarists of the era, MacAlpine was also one of the first to embrace 7 and 8 string guitars.

Death Of Roses is a comeback of sorts, since MacAlpine was diagnosed with colon cancer in 2015. Having undergone successful treatment, he returns to the Instrumental Progressive Rock, Shred, Neoclassical forefront with Death Of Roses. As expected, the 7 songs on the record are chops-laden, musical monsters, and sure to please fans of Instrumental Rock, Progressive Rock, Neoclassical and Shred Metal. MacAlpine is a master of the craft, both as a guitarist and keyboardist. To the average listener, the absence of vocals is always a downfall. But the songs on Death Of Roses have much to offer in their stead.

About Stevie Shred 166 Articles
Stevie was a reviewer here at Metal Express Radio. He is currently the lead guitarist for Melodic Rock band Red Reign, based in Richmond, Virginia, USA. Red Reign toured with Tesla in 2017, and shared the stage with Dokken, FireHouse, Lita Ford, Kix, Quiet Riot, and others at various dates around the US in 2018. Stevie heard his first KISS record at the age of 6 and was immediately hooked on Rock and Roll guitar. Over the course of years his tastes evolved, graduating from KISS to Ozzy and Van Halen; and then into Hair Metal. Over time, harder and faster music drew him. Bands like Metallica, Pantera, and Anthrax led the way, and Killswitch Engage took him over the top. Stevie has a deep passion for the guitar, not only playing them, but building them as well.
