WALPYRGUS – Walpyrgus Nights

This debut, full-length release from US-based Walpyrgus overcomes some production missteps to deliver a collection of hooky, catchy, memorable Melodic Metal tunes.

After a successful self-titled EP in 2014 and several high-profile live outings, Walpyrgus returned to the studio to complete Walpyrgus Nights. The 8-track offering features complex layers of Traditional Metal and Hard Rock elements, blended with a slightly more modern sounding vocal delivery.

Shortcomings of this release include the overall minimal full-length running time and a sonic signature that is lacking in bass and general lower frequencies. Had the production been more robust, this could be a 9/10 point album. As it is, the songs are still enjoyable, very catchy, and well-delivered, but the thinness of the sound is frustratingly lacking. Hopefully Walpyrgus will soldier on and give fans a more amped-up offering in the future.

The overall vibe here is very reminiscent of the heavier RIOT releases and will please fans of that style. Highlights include “The Night Of The Dead” and “Palmystry”.
