Unifaun is a Swedish Progressive Rock band that set out to make the songs Genesis never did. The two men behind the name Unifaun met at a forum for Genesis fans, and after a while they found out they had a lot in common and decided to work together. As a result they recorded their self-titled debut album; Unifaun.

Unifaun’s music sounds extremely similar to what Genesis sounded like between 1972 and 1980. They’ve used Banks-like organs and mellotrons which more or less was a trademark for Genesis between 1972 and 1974, and lots of the songs are long, complex and intricate just like Progressive Rock in that time. Nad Sylvan’s voice sounds frighteningly like a mix of Peter Gabriel and Phil Collins, and at times it’s difficult to tell if it’s one of them singing or if it’s just Sylvan.

The label says in a press release that a couple of the tracks on this album “…could have been written for [the Genesis album] The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway as well as for the Duke.” As you may have guessed already; this album lacks originality.

All the songs are written by Unifaun during the last four years, with the exception of “Mr. Marmaduke And The Minister” which was written and performed by a late 70’s Progressive Rock band led by Sylvan. This is also the only song worth spending some time listening to. And while you're at it; the album cover art is one of the saddest attempts to make “weird” art with a “deeper meaning” to it, that you’ll find on a CD in 2008, or ever for that matter. It’s simply very depressing.

On their website, Unifaun states "…somebody pointed out we’re not just another Genesis tribute band. We’re a Genesis soundscape band. We don’t cover their songs. So, suppose that makes us a Genesis soundscape band, and not a Genesis tribute band.” Well, the Eskimos have a great number of words for snow, but no matter how many names it has it is still... snow. It’s the same with Unifaun; you can say you’re only living in another band’s soundscape all you want, but in the end, a band that tries to sound just like another band and are even promoting themselves by saying that these songs could have easily been taken off this Genesis album, and those songs could have been taken off that Genesis album, is, and always will be, a Genesis tribute band!

There is nothing original about Unifaun’s music at all, and it belongs in the Genesis forum, not in record stores! If the financial crisis that recently struck the world economy is good for something, then let’s hope it makes the record labels more selective about what they release so that we don’t have to suffer through albums like this anymore. If you want to listen to Genesis, go buy a Genesis record. Don't waste your money on this.
Unifaun represents everything that is wrong with the music business these days; it’s far too easy to get a record released!

Nad Sylvan – Vocals, guitars, keyboards, drums
Bonamici – Keyboards, basses, percussion

"a band that tries to sound just like another band and are even promoting themselves by saying that these songs could have easily been taken off this Genesis album, and those songs could have been taken off that Genesis album, is, and always will be, a Genesis tribute band!" This is simply not true. Unifaun have never ever said that. What you have read is from the Unifaun review page over at Progress Records. http://www.progressrec.com/the_label/unifaun-reviews.html By the way, quiet interesting reading. ;)

@ Nic C.: Let me quote you - "Just look at the crap that is given positive reviews here!" I hope you are aware that you are just doing the thing you are accusing Kristian of. Only Kristian made himself vulnerable by explaining his opinion and actually going into depths here, having taken the effort to have given the album his utmost attention and professionality, although he may not be a Prog fanatic. Did you do that to all the "crap"? If you take a step back, you will realize that a negative review can be absolutely deserved and even obligatory when an emphasis is placed on originality, something which must be in the focus of a reviewer since there have never been so many releases per month as we have today. UNIFAUN is unoriginal. Period. Such a review does not say "who likes it is stupid", even if you go to length to interpret it into his words. It says "if you do not know the band and album, go buy Genesis first". I agree to that. Have the original before you turn to the copy. You know all Genesis albums of that period by heart? You want "new" songs in the same vain? Well, then Kristian described the album thoroughly and to the point. What do you care if he likes it personally, or if he gave it a low score? The band already made one sale through this very accurate review, I guess that is more than many others may claim... So let's get all down from the barricades and face it: Tastes are different. We can talk about it, but never argue, as there is no wrong or right. The "crap" here seems to be liked by others, what makes you so special that only your opinion counts? Just for the record: I listened to the four songs the band streams on Soundclick, and I absolutely love it. Still, I would not give it a high score either, as this is for old Genesis fans only, and everybody else... guess what? I quote: "If you want to listen to Genesis, go buy a Genesis record.". Very true.

"Unifaun represents everything that is wrong with the music business these days; it’s far too easy to get a record released" That must is the dumbest and most ignorant statement of 2009. What could ever top that??

What we have here is just another negative review about a GREAT progrock album. It happens almost all of the time. It happened to Yes and Genesis more times than not. So, UNIFAUN should not lose any sleep over this, because I doubt the reviewer is even a prog fan. Just look at the crap that is given positive reviews here! The fact is that GENESIS have not made quality prog since 1980 or earlier. So I find it very pleasing that someone is doing it, and utilizing some of the same techniques that "classic" GENESIS did, because I miss that sound on NEW material. Who says it must stop? A reviewer? To be regarded as being so close to what GENESIS has already done is a kind of compliment. Forget that it's Nad and Bon doing this. If it was Phil, Tony, Steve and Mike it would be their best album since Wind and Wuthering! In fact, it's better than anything the trio of Phil - Tony and Mike! BUY IT! If people listened to reviewers in the 1970's to not buy "Close to the Edge" or "Brain Salad Surgery" none of those would be regarded as a classic today. BUY UNIFAUN if you *ARE* a GENESIS fan, then you will be a UNIFAUN fan like me!

I think Nad and Bon recorded this music initially keeping a low profile just for fun and games. This had been going on for years I´ve read somewhere and they got signed without even asking for it, humble as they seem to be at least in my eyes. Genesis-fans obviously begged them to produce more, hence the album is indeed a labour of love and should only be regarded as just that. They are not trying to BE Genesis, no one can do that. So by saying "If you want to listen to Genesis, go buy a Genesis record. Don't waste your money on this", that is a direct insult to Nad and Bon, whose intentions were to honour Genesis and their fans with new music in that sort of world, call it a pastiche. A bit like Tears for Fears "Growing the seeds of love" maybe, or Marillion back in the days. I´d rather listen to Unifaun any day than putting on a Genesis record post 1980. It´s just like coming home to me. Ps. Highlight of the album that brings tears to my eyes is definitely the epic "Quest for the last virtue". Pete

oops... I wanted to say "will check out the band now with high expectations". Sorry. I listened to a song and, well, Genesis it is. Good singer, this album may have the potential to become my favorite non-Genesis Genesis album (so far it is Discipline - Push & Profit). It is in my cart at my favorite mailorder, with my next order it is going to be mine... and in the meantime I will listen to "Lamb..."

As an outside perspective: I found the review quite helpful. I love old Genesis stuff, so it makes a lot of sense for me to check out Unifaun. Kritian made sure I know what I get if I do, as the statement of unoriginality actually can turn into a positive statement for someone who would love to have another old Genesis album. So it is a tribute bands with new songs. A 0,5 for being a total rip off is absolutely understandable, but nevertheless I will check out the band and album not with high expectations. I am really curious if the band can live up to Kristian's "praise". Without this review I am not sure if I would have done that as I did not hear about this album before, although it is out for half a year. Seems like "mission accomplished" for reviewer and label, does it not? And now I will turn to the band website, C U later... :)

Hansi: We obviously have different opinions of how good this album is and so forth, but I don't think that if I give an album a negative review it means that I didn't get it. I think that's a bit narrow-minded. Behind every release, be it a Britney Spears album or a Progressive Rock album, there is a lot of hard work, but you can't give an album a great review only based on that. One would also think that what the label writes in a press release does somewhat reflect what the artist thinks. I also think this would also be a natural assumption to make since, in this case, the band members met on a Genesis forum and are big Genesis fans. That's the reason why this little misunderstanding happened in the first place. But again; I sincerely apologies for the misunderstanding, and I hope there are no hard feelings. The error has now been corrected.

Posted by Hansi Cross on 11/01/2009 12:50:03

Hi Kristian, You of course have the right to your own opinion. I don't want it any other way. I just did not want things to look like something they are not. Unfortunally I see some of this kind of errors every now and then and actually find it somewhat ignorant. One must not like the music but one shall understand that most albums released is a result of hard work and deserves a proper research in order to deliver correct info. I also are of the opinion that, if one doesn't get it, why write about it? But that's of course just one man's opinion.

Posted by Kristian / Metal Express Radio on 11/01/2009 11:52:34

Hansi: I'm sorry for the misprint. That was unintentionally. I've corrected the error now. I'm not trying to make anyone look bad. I'm reviewing the album the way I see it, and unfortunately, one might say, this one didn't get a positive review. Pete: There will always be people who disagree with reviewers no matter how positive or negative the review may be. Fortunately for Unifaun, this review is just one man's opinion. You should always check out albums and make up your own opinion, not take for granted that I hold all the facts. As I said, it's just one man's opinion.

Oooops! I adressed the wrong person. Sorry about that, Pete. I, of course, ment to write to Kristian Nergård.

Posted by Hansi Cross on 11/01/2009 11:38:32

Hello Pete, This is Hansi Cross at Progress Records. I want to point out an error in your review of Unifaun's album. You used the following quote: "The band says in a press release that a couple of the tracks on this album “…could have been written for [the Genesis album] The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway as well as for the Duke.” This is not a statement from the band. This is taken from the press release sent out from the label in order to describe how the music sounds. When you use it as you do it certainly looks as if the band compare themselves to Genesis. It seems that your intention is to make them look bad. I hope it is the result of a clumsy language rather than an attempt to discredit Nad and Bonamici and that your intentions are not as bad as it looks.

Posted by Pete Janson on 10/01/2009 19:42:40

What crap nonsens. You don´t seem to get the message, do you. People should just ignore this review and listen to this great album as it is extremely strong in its own right.
